I’m William, 2016

By Jen Painter

In their portraits, each child surrounds him/her self with objects and words. The objects are most important to them. Their words come from a conversation about individuality, society and America. Transcripts are created from parts of their interviews, from which words and phrases were extracted and combined with the portrait. Nothing is altered or grammatically corrected. It is kid-speak. The interviews are meant to be read on floating pages, like documents to be archived in history. You are meant to read their thoughts and ideas freely. Everything is presented in tones of black, except for their skin, which is printed in its true color. You may focus on the vibrant colors, and you could also focus on what is not colorful. By only seeing their skin, each child’s individuality, experiences and desires are separated from who they are or even unseen. Each element is created together, between child and photographer, reflecting and exploring their social and individual identities.
