Primary I; The Tales of Red Rag Rosie Chalkboard by Shervone Neckles

Primary I

By Shervone Neckles

The Tales of Red Rag Rosie blends surface with depth, past with the present, real with the imaginary and serious with the playful. Through the use of craft techniques; doll making, quilt making and crocheting the work attempts to identify the stories we choose to tell and those we choose to deny. Primary 1 questions Red Rag Rosie’s introduction to image and language through the 1940’s Dick and Jane primary school book. From the 1920’s to 1970’s Dick and Jane was required literature in early childhood reading and writing programs. Primary 1 considers the implication of an education that does not reflect Red Rag Rosie’s historical narrative or her personal experiences. In Blackboard, Red Rag Rosie uses pictorial symbols, the earliest known form of writing, to retell the complex tale of slavery, subjugation, and the spirit of resistance.
