“Rethinking Womyn of Color Organizing (Andrea Smith)”, 2016

By Mitsuko Brooks

I painted a diagram illustrating Andrea Smith’s theories on how to debunk racial hierarchies with womyn of color onto a children’s easel board left out for trash in Los Angeles. The circles which overlap read: Asian American Womyn, Black Womyn, Latinas, Muslim Womyn. . . . In 2015, Smith’s validity as a Native womyn was under scrutiny. Although Smith’s validity as a Native womyn has been debunked online, I find a basis in her writings about racial wounds and healing still relevant. The easel is covered in dripping organic matter and dried adhesives to illustrate the weight of her own identity crisis and the ongoing racial issues we continue to face today.
