The central object of this installation was purchased this year on the internet as a Halloween mask called “Angry Indian.” I wanted to showcase it as an artifact. I kept imaging seeing it in some future cultural institute as an actual archeological find displayed in an simulated dig. Naturally, however, I wanted to add the twist of the mirror where the viewer might catch a glimpse of their own reflection and think of their own identity. Real arrowheads scattered in the sand are secondary and even inconsequential to the discarded/discovered mask that portrays of the Native American as a caricature.
