Over Our Heads, 2020

To be clear, slavery and immigration are two different systems. Slavery involved the kidnapping, forced labor and inhumane practices of torture/death on Africans and their descendants. Immigration speaks to a group of people entering a country seeking asylum from political duress, Temporary Protected Services (TPS) after a natural disaster and a myriad of other reasons, but most importantly, it speaks to choice. However, despite many adversities, both groups of people and their descendants were committed to making this land their home. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and the current actions of ICE are examples of how the government enacts laws and policies that separates families and removes access to the civil liberties of daily life. And what remains is the idea of “Freedom” dangling over our heads.
