J.I. v. United States

By Ann Lewis

Seeking a home free from violence, oppression, and fear has been the struggle of millions of people throughout history. Crossing great distances for this hope of safety and freedom is often met with more brutality and xenophobia. As I look to our southern border, an arbitrary line of blood in the sand, I hear misogynist and white nationalist sentiment reverberate out of our president’s mouth with total disregard for the life or death consequences of his words. Women and trans people of color have and continue to face these consequences with greater astriction and frequency than anyone else. It’s up to all of us to change that. Currently, there are countless children and adults locked up in detention centers all over the country because they don’t possess the state-required paperwork to live on this side of a specious border line. They are separated from their family, friends, and are living in squalid conditions.
